Ukiyo was created during a 48-hour design challenge, blending traditional Japanese izakaya culture with a modern, laid-back vibe. Designed with a 15-member interdisciplinary team, the concept balances elegance and approachability, making it a perfect spot for both refined meals and casual hangouts. Completed in June 2022, Ukiyo brings thoughtful design and bold branding together in a space that feels both timeless and fresh.
CONCEPT EXPLORATION
A concept based on the juxtaposition of softness and structure found in the design aesthetic of Issey Miyake. The linearity of traditional Japanese design will be challenged and rearranged atypically to create complex details in a thought-provoking environment.

SELECTED CONCEPT: SHO SUGI BAN
Traditional Japanese design is celebrated though the exploration of intricate connections from small details to broader space planning in order to invoke the feeling of an Izakaya – a Japanese pub – while the interplay between refined details and the material elegance of Shou Sugi Ban work in tangent to elevate the interior experience.
